Sons of God and Daughters of Men

Gen. 6:1-4

Milton Dunavant

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
   2
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which, they chose.
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Question: Did angels take wives, procreate, till the soil, raise their children, etc? Or, was it a mere one night stand and then a desertion of their wives and children? Think of it!

Question: Does this teach that the normal length of man’s life was to become 120 years? Does it teach that Noah began to build the Ark 120 years before the flood?

Answer: Neither. It teaches that after 120 years, the Lord would no longer strive with men and their wickedness, but would bring the flood upon the earth and take them away. This warning was 120 years before the flood.

Question: Were the sons of God the angels of God’s heavenly host which came in unto the daughters of men and caused mighty men (men of renown) to be born by these women?

Answer: No. According to the scripture, they definitely were not.

Mat. 22:23-30-33
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Mk. 12:18-25-27
25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

Lk. 20:27-35-36-38
34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

Angels do not marry and are not given in marriage; therefore angels do not procreate, neither do they die. These characteristics do not mix with those of humans.

The whole idea that angels and daughters of men intermarried and bore children (half angel and half human) seems to be a fantastic assumption denied by the scriptures. It assumes character traits upon the angels that are plainly denied by the word of God. I don’t know how it started, and am surprised that it has survived in the minds of some.

These unions were an unholy mixture. Apparently, the sons of God were believers, who lusted after the daughters of men, who were unbelievers: This ungodly mixture and fleshly lust brought abnormal off-springs. Apparently, it brought the displeasure of the Lord God and was not a blessing to the marriage, but a curse.
